Letter from the O.D. Shag Club President....

ODSCPresident’s Letter

It is noteworthy to point out that both our January events had far better attendance than last year. This is very good news for all of us and we thank you for your support.

At the Mid-Winter Brunch, we had 270 people enjoy great food and fellowship and at the Clean Sweep, we had over 30 folks help us spruce up Ocean Dr. and Main Street in NMB. At both events we had a tremendous turn out of “new faces”, as well as “old” hands. It was terrific meeting and socializing with the new members.  New members are the “lifeline” of any organization and we “old” hands, all of us, need to make sure our new members feel welcome.  We all must do our part to insure that they feel good about choosing to join our club.

With January winding down, I am really looking forward to February for several reasons.

One reason (and the most important reason), we will be hosting our world famous Oyster Roast, on the 18th at the OD Arcade at 6:00 pm. This is truly one of our finest functions of the whole year. It is the number ONE event attendance wise (340 folks attended  last year).Because of the many experienced volunteers working together, this event is awesome just to watch them perform the many tasks that they accomplish, in short order and in cramped conditions. I think of it as a synchronized chaos and I surely mean this as a compliment!  Please be sure to thank all of our volunteers as you enjoy the party.

Another reason we look forward to Feb. is the ACSC Winter Workshop at Hilton Head Island the last week of the month. These are really good meetings that will help us become better leaders of our club. We will learn from other clubs failures as well as their success to make our club better. We are required to attend these meeting as members of the Assn. of Carolinas Shag Clubs.

Another reason to look forward to Feb. is that we will have the opportunity to watch not one, but two Super Bowls….how good is that! The NFL’s Super Bowl and NASCAR’s Super Bowl, the Daytona 500. Can’t forget, Valentine’s Day is also in Feb.

In closing, I look forward to seeing each of you on the 18th. It will be fun!

Bob Sanders
President 2012

North Myrtle Beach Christmas Parade....

Saturday night, Dec. 3rd, the OD Shag Club again participated in the city of N.M. Beach’s annual Christmas parade.

A total of forty-nine members and guests were in the parade. There were 11 beautifully decorated golf carts with 46 drivers and passengers, while 3 people walked the route, 2 of which carried the ODSC banner.

While the parade participants were preparing to do their “thing”, there were another 20 or so members in Harold’s parking lot getting ready to do their “thing”, which was to support and cheer our friends as they paraded passed us on their way to their stop point.

After the parade (it seemed like all 69 of us), we had an impromptu party inside of Harold’s and a good time was enjoyed by all.

By all accounts the parade was a huge success. The children, both those in the parade and on the sidewalks, had a terrific time and got to see horses, fire engines, bands, motorcycles, floats and finally Santa Claus.

The club would like to thank Wendy Schultz, our Parade committee chairlady, for her time and efforts to plan and organize our parade participants. Wendy says “I would like to give special thanks to my loyal helper, Becky Moody, for getting everyone signed in. She works hard and takes her job very seriously”. Well Wendy, we feel the same way about you and your team.

Myrtle Beach Manor Christmas Party....

The Christmas bells were jingling and seasonal joy was wafting in the air, as the OD Shag Club entertained the residents of Myrtle Beach Manor at their annual Christmas party.  This year we were joined by The Mermaids, a local women’s group, when we encountered a scheduling conflict.  Combining forces we were able to provide an even larger party than we originally planned.

The party began with twelve members of the Mermaids, a local women’s group, singing four Christmas carols for the assembled residents of 27 women and 2 men.

After caroling, we served the residents a variety of refreshments including cookies, chocolates and wine.

Entertainment continued with a visit from Santa Clause (Phil Benedict) as club members distributed Christmas stockings and the Mermaids passed out their gift bags to the residents.  Santa then circulated among the residents so each could have their picture taken with Santa.

Kevin and Susan Harrell lit up the night on their juke box with shag music provided by Joe Ferlauto.  After reacquainting the residents with the basic shag steps, Lenny Gardiner and Joe led the dancing with all the willing little ‘ol ladies, which were quite a few.  With all the dancing, we were all getting pretty warm.  So to cool things down we invited our club “comedians” to tell a few jokes, which the residents especially requested again this year.  Lenny, Phil and Joe stepped up and delighted of the crowd.

By now some of the gals were fading and began returning to their rooms.  We ended the evening with hugs and kisses all around with very appreciative residents.

I want to give a special thanks to all the club and board members who came out last Monday night to party with the little old ladies and gentlemen:  Sandy Cummings, Wendy and Donnie Schultz, Cassy Shumway, Cindy Day, and Tom and Myra Jenkins

There are some individual thanks that are also deserved.  Phil Benedict was a big hit as Santa.  Kevin and Susan Harrell graciously provided the karaoke machine.  Joe Ferlauto brought his shag music.  And a “Thank You” to Lenny, Phil, and Joe for your comedy.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all !!!

OD Shag Club Christmas Party....

The OD Shag Club Christmas Party was held on Saturday night, December 17th at Fat Harold’s.  Outgoing President, Rich Young, presented Certificates of Appreciation to all those members who volunteered their time chairing or co-chairing various committees, coordinating events or doing special projects for the club.  He also presented certificates to the 2011 Board members.  President-Elect Bob Sanders presented Rich with an ODSC jacket for completing his 2011 term as President.

There were many positive comments about the dinner which included bacon wrapped filet mignon steaks, chicken marsala, scalloped potatoes and Italian green beans.  Dolly McDermott, Fay Chowning and the Food Committee did an excellent job again.  Ronald & Paula McLelland entertained us by singing and leading our members in singing some Christmas carols. Thanks to Karen Young and Kathy Sanders some our members were able to renew their membership for 2012.  We also had several new members join our club.

The license plate was won by Hope Fahey and Vic Gillespie was our 50/50 winner.

A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who sponsored a child and bought clothing and toys on their wish list and to all who brought food to give to the four needy families.  Fifteen members worked on Sunday to sort all the donations by family and everything was delivered to the North Myrtle Beach Elementary and North Myrtle Beach Intermediate schools on Monday.

Thanks to all.  It was a fun year and time just flew by so fast.
Rich Young

OD Shag Club Mid-Winter Brunch....

What a way to start off 2012!!! We had a great turn out for our Mid Winter Brunch at the OD Arcade. There were 270 in attendance and that was including 257 members, 13 guests and 3 new members. A huge thank you to all the staff at the Arcade for doing such a great job at hosting our Brunch. We would also like to thank Murl Augustine for entertaining us with great music and Cathy Fitzsimmons and Lee Anderson for teaching us "the Biker Shuffle" line dance. A special thanks to Hospitality and Ways and Means Committees for their hard work.

Hope to see everyone at "The World Famous OD Shag Club Oyster Roast" on February 18, at the OD Arcade.

Donnie Schultz
ODSC Vice President

OD Shag Club Clean Sweep....

Oh what a difference a year makes! Last year at the Mid-Winter Clean Sweep we froze our butts. This year it was near 60 degrees and sunny.  So it stands to reason that we had an increase in participation.  Thirty-six club members “braved” the warm and sunny early Saturday morning to clean the trash from Main Street and Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach

Warm breakfast sandwiches, hot coffee and cold toddies greeted the troops at 8:00 am as we convened at the Pavilion.  After a brief “social hour”, we donned our orange vests, selected a trash grabber (supplied by NMB Parks Dept.), picked-up a garbage bag and struck off to do our duty.

As usual, it took the gang just a little over an hour to filled trash bags with all sorts of debris, garbage and junk, a total of 45 bags in all.  By 10:00 am we cleaned and policed the meeting site and moved on to get ready for an afternoon/evening of college basketball or another party (or both).

For those members listed below who showed up on Saturday:  THANK YOU!!!  As for the rest of you, we hope to see you at the Spring Clean Sweep.
