from the President
Checking the forecast, it looks like we need a Summer Vortex to roll in for SOS since it is so early this year. However, spending time with friends and dancing our feet off will warm us all up.
The St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 15th was a great success due to Wendy Schultz’s efforts. We had 37 golf carts participate and we took first place in the non-profit division. The parade was televised and we were well recognized by the announcers. They mentioned they would enjoy having a small group demonstrate the shag for the crowd next year.
The 29th of March was our Oyster Roast Party at the OD Pavilion. A big thank you to Donnie Schultz and his crew for all their hard work getting everything set up and cooking the oysters. The chicken bog was prepared by Jack at Fat Harold’s. A big thank you also to Heidi Cross and her committee for helping set up, preparing the cocktail sauce and serving the chicken bog. Thanks also to those that stayed after and helped to clean up. Tina Tomberlain had our annual Oyster roast shirts for sale. It takes a lot of volunteers to prepare for some of our events and we appreciate all they do. If you want to make new friends, volunteer to help on one of our committees. You will not regret it.
I ran across a quote awhile back that I liked. “Never underestimate the value of volunteers. Noah’s Ark was built by volunteers. The Titanic was built by professionals”.
Now it is time to decorate for the SOS parade. If you haven’t let Wendy Schultz know you want to participate, then be sure to call her and sign up. Enjoy SOS and party safely with all our SOS friends from afar.
The Ways and Means Committee sold our annual Oyster Roast shirts. If you didn’t get yours yet, see Tina Tomberlain and her committee. They will be setting up to sell apparel during SOS next to the Fundraiser tent. The Golf Cart is ready and looks great so we can sell tickets. Linda Campbell is heading up the committee. Contact her if you want to volunteer to help.
I am going to repeat my challenge to our members for the golf tournament in September. Many businesses set their charitable donations by April of each year so we need to get our bids in for some of those dollars now for hole sponsorships and raffle prizes. I would like to challenge our members to get at least one raffle prize worth at least $15 or one hole sponsorship. Many of our members live too far away to volunteer on committees, but this is one way you could help your club. A new member, Jon Holtzclaw, has volunteered to co-chair the golf tournament with Geoff Girling.
In May, the party has been moved to Swillie’s Hideaway on 2nd avenue north across from Santee Cooper. We will be having a cookout. The club will provide the hamburgers and hot dogs and we are asking the members to bring their favorite side dish. Swillie’s has a great dance floor. Hope to see you there.
The OD Shag Club board meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 1st at 6:00 PM at Fat Harold’s Beach Club on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. Committee chairpersons are requested to attend and give a report. All interested members are encouraged and welcome to attend. In addition, if any member desires to be on the agenda, please notify Karen Young, (843)399-4861 email@example.com one week prior to the meeting.
February 15 may have been the day after Valentine's Day, however "Love was definitely in the Air" as club members entered Fat Harold's which had been transformed into "The Love Boat"!
As members were greeted by the "Hospitality Girls" and given their tickets for wearing the OD Shag Club Logo and Name badge, each one "boarded" through a doorway of balloons and "WELCOME ABOARD".
Once inside the party began. Karen Young, 2014 President welcomed each member (about 175 plus) and introduced a dozen or so new members. Joe Ferlauto also announced that the club will be entertaining the residents of the Myrtle Beach Manor on Easter Monday and asked for volunteers to help. Billy Powell also announced a "trial" way of selling 50/50 tickets which proved to be a success as Lou Garrenton won over $250. Hint... Be sure to buy your tickets from Billy OR the tallest person selling tickets.
Immediately following, Karen turned the microphone over to Linda Campbell (aka.... Julie McCoy, Cruise Director of The Love Boat). "Julie" introduced the crew who enjoyed the rest of the evening meeting their "cruisers".
The Crew included:
Captain Stubing- Lou Martino
Pursor "Gopher" Smith- John Barringer
Doc Bricker- Brian Schmitt
Bartender Isaac Washington- Bob Sanders
After a blessing was given by DJ David Harris, the members were treated to a bountiful buffet of 22 different pots of chili and all the sides . Thank you to Heidi Cross and her "crew" for organizing such a wonderful and delicious experience. After dinner 4 members names were drawn from a hat and each won $25 for their chili. They were Heidi Cross, Carol Ferlauto, Marcia Ferris and one other.
DJ David Harris spun all our favorite tunes which also included some special songs for some of the couples which included Joe and Carol Ferlauto who have been married 50 years.... CONGRATULATIONS!
The party continued with a "Celebrity Showcase" in which we were entertained by:
The Diamonds- Lou Martino, Bill Rowland, John Barringer, and Bill Althoff
Whitney Houston- June Keheler
The Supremes- Michele Rowland, Lou Garrenton, and Linda Morrison
Connie Francis- Diane Tindall
Cupid- Lenny Gardner
George Jones- Dickey Garrenton
Sonny and Cher- Lou Martino and Linda Campbell
And the Grand Finale Elvis Presley (Joe Ferlauto) who sang "Teddy Bear" and showered a few select ladies with stuffed Teddy Bears.
The rest of the evening the party continued with line dancing to Cupid Shuffle and and shaggin the nite away.
Many thanks goes out to those who helped transform Fat Harold's into The Love Boat on Saturday morning and help change it back at the end of the "cruise". A good time was had by all and we look forward to our next " port" which will be OD Pavillion for our famous Oyster Roast on March 29th.
Ahoy members, see ya there!
OD Shag Club has done it again...First Place Non-Profit!!!!
I would like to thank everyone for a fabulous turnout. We set a record by having 127 members and guests and our group was 37 golf carts long. The OD Shag Club was looking good!!! Thanks to Pat Harris for taking pictures and Heidi Cross and Judie Shepard for carrying the Banner. Also a big thanks to everyone for being so patient with me taking attendance. We had a very large group but are hoping for a bigger crowd at the SOS Parade and I will have assistants to take attendance.

Rain nor fog could stop one of the greatest OD Shag Club Oyster Roasts yet! The event this year was held Saturday, March 29th at the OD Pavilion and it was great. It seemed to be a perfect spot according to many who attended. There was plenty of space and the oysters and Chicken Bog were fantastic! Cassy, Cindy and Judy were very busy signing in over 270 people to the oyster roast.
Many thanks to Donnie Schultz and his team for the hard work and the great food. Everyone ate their fill to some of the best music. Tootie Brown just kept the music going with songs that everyone loved. Billy Powell and Sonny Tomberlin worked the crowd selling 50/50 tickets for a total of $500.00 with $250.00 going to the winner.
Debbie Holmes won $20 for logo apparel. Beth Hughes, better known as “Bus Stop” won $20.00 for the name tag. Rumor has it that Lou Garrenton had not won the 50/50 for 17 years. Well, she has made up for lost time by winning the 50/50 two months in a row. Lou was presented with $250 for the 50/50. She graciously donated $100 back to the club. Thank you, Lou!
Thanks again to Donnie Schultz, his crew and the OD Pavilion for a great event!
Chris and the gang do a wonderful job cooking up our favorite breakfast foods for our members and guests and we have a fantastic time, every time. We'll have the screwdrivers and bloody mary's iced and ready ... all you have to do is show up for a great party and stay a while and enjoy great friends, food, music and dance.
Free to members.......member's guest $10.00.
The SOS Parade will be Saturday April 12th at 1:00 pm. We will start lining up at 11 am that Saturday morning around the Kroger / Bi Lo area on Main Street.
Our theme for this years SOS parade will be "The Ocean Drive Magic Kingdom". This will also be a way to show appreciation for all the hard work and dedication we receive from the Clubs that support SOS. We have 5 Clubs to choose from and we can use their Characters from Logos to make up our Magic Kingdom.
When emailing to sign up, please list your 1st, 2nd and 3rd Club choice and I will then return an email back with your confirmation regarding which is available to insure that we represent all the clubs equally. Because this is a first come first serve (by email), it will in turn make it fair to all ODSC members.
Wendy's email: firstname.lastname@example.org
The SOS Awards Ceremony will be held at Fat Harold’s at 3:30 following the parade, so please join in the FUN! The OD Shag Club has won 1st Place for Best Shagging Troop 11 years in a row. With everyone’s help and participation we can make it TWELVE.
Thank you for your participation,

Myrtle Beach Manor Easter visit will be on Monday, April 21st (The day after Easter Sunday). The Easter visit will include a retake of the show that we did for the Valentines Party at Harolds as well as dancing, singing and just plain visiting the residents. We will have an Easter cake and a special visit by the Easter Bunny.
The residents of the Manor get many visits during the Christmas Season, but very little activity the rest of the year. This is our first Easter visit and hopefully not our last, so please make an effort to attend. You will make someone smile and there is nothing more rewarding that that.
