Where on earth can the temperature be 60 on one day and snowing the next? Yea,
only in the Shag capital of the world , and we are ready to get over it!
I love March as it is usually the beginning of the spring thaw and the start of
our active season. With the oyster roast behind us and the taste of the chilly
cook off still on our lips we are rapidly approaching the St. Patrick’s day
parade on March 13th. Please join your club for a great day of fun and
friendship. We will be lining up for the parade at 8:30 on Saturday with all the
leprechauns we can catch. You may choose to drive your decorated golf cart or
walk along with some shagger friends . Either way, don’t miss this event. The
street party will start at the end of the parade and it is always a wonderful
event.
We will have your monthly party the following
Saturday, March 20 at 6 pm at Harold’s Beach Club. The entertainment is reported
to be something very special. Really, really, don’t miss this one!
Finally, it is time to get in tune for the SOS
parade in April. Donnie is collecting ideas and signing up volunteers to work on
the float theme. Half of the parade fun is being part of his committee. Please
give Donnie a hand to insure another winning entry. The tradition lives on! Hope
to see you all in the next few weeks.
See ya at the beach,

Well, the O.D. Shag Club pulled off another Great Mid-Winter Brunch. The well
organized check in table manned by Stack Stackhouse and his crew, and the re-up
table under the watchful eye of Karen Young insured a very smooth and easy check
in. With over 260 members and guests, that was a real accomplishment.
As usual, our brunch wouldn’t be the same without
Mural Augustine and his vinyl treasures (yea, he used a computer this time).
Maybe next time we will let him act natural and not confine him to his “Sunday“
composure. RIGHT!
The 50/50 was won by our newest member, Leo
Garcia. Congratulations Leo, and our congratulations also to Johnny Wallace who
won the Logo Contest.
Lee Anderson and Cathy Fitzsimmons managed to
teach another new line dance. Not too sure where they come up with all of
the line dances, but keep up the good work. Everyone enjoyed it.
We cannot forget to commend Chris and the cooks and bar tenders from the Arcade.
The food was excellent and plentiful. The eye openers were pretty darn good as
well. Good job Chris and our thanks as always. See you again at the Spring
Migration!
Forty-two brave souls confronted the early
Saturday morning chill to participate in the 2010 Winter Clean Sweep held
January 23. After fortifying themselves with hot coffee, breakfast sandwiches,
cinnamon rolls, camaraderie and some Friday night gossip, forty-one community
minded O.D. Shag Club members disbursed to pick up trash. One member remained at
the O. D. Pavilion command post to protect and serve the coffee. H. Lee and Pam
Brown graciously donated the command post and electricity to keep the coffee hot
(thank you, H. Lee and Pam).
The trash “picker-uppers” covered an area five-blocks north and south of Main
Street and 3 to 4 blocks west toward Rt. 17. By 10 am, the intrepid troupe of
trash collectors amassed a pile (sorry I did not do and exact count) of fully
and partially full orange trash bags. With their duty done, the “crew” finished
the coffee and donut holes and returned home.
Thanks to all who participated and those other members who were with us in
spirit. It WAS fun. We hope to see you all at the Spring Clean Sweep scheduled
for May 1, for which we have ordered a warm and balmy day.
The World Famous ODSC oyster roast was held Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the
Boulevard Grill. Despite extremely poor weather conditions, the turn out was
great and everyone enjoyed the 35 plus bushels of oysters that were cooked.
Chicken bog, prepared by Fat Harold's crew, complimented the roast. 245 members
were served.
Many thanks to Paul Harrison for his tremendous efforts organizing this event. A
big "THANK YOU" to the many volunteers that participated to make this event a
huge success. Several of the cooks and runners this year were new to the oyster
roast. In fact, some were not even members. The runners did a fantastic job of
getting the oysters to the tables as quickly as they came out of the pots! The
food committee and friends did a super job making and organizing the condiments
and serving the bog. Special thanks to Billy Miles from Virginia for his
"prescription" to help keep the outside workers warm. Thanks to Connie and Mike
for once again letting us use the Boulevard Grill.
Obviously, a lot of work goes into the organization, preparation, set-up, clean
up, etc. of this event. However, helping out can be fun. Ask any of the work
crews from this year and any one of them will tell you what a blast we had.
Consider volunteering next year and see for yourself. Hope to see you all next
January when we do this all over again.
What a great Chili Cook-off! We had 190 members and 3 guest in attendance. Our
greeters at the door were George and Jackie Driscoll, and Cherry Killian. Thanks
you for your hard work! Their was plenty of chili along with salads, cheese dip
and desserts. Thanks to everyone for bringing the great food to share with
everyone. Our Chili Cook-off winners were 3rd place Charles McArthur($25.00),
2nd place Bill Bacon($50.00), and 1st place was Wimp Slaughter($100.00).
Congratulation to all of you!
Our judges for the chili were Clark Chowning, George Elefantis, and Fred Medley.
Mayor Marilyn Hatley attended to try some chili and sign the certificates for
the winners. A special thank you to Faye Chowning and all the busy bee's helping
to make our meal so enjoyable. Thank you Rich and Karen Young with the food set
up.
The entertainment and Valentine baskets were a big hit! Lots of laugh as the
couples danced for our enjoyment. Our dancers were Phil Benedict, Lee Anderson,
Randy Massy, Gail Craver, Ron Poliquin, Pamela Longo, Lynn Garner, Liz and John
Sturgeon, and R.A. Taylor. They really showed us some new moves! Thanks all of
you! The winners of the beautiful baskets were Sheila Wright and Bill Rowland.
Sue Williams did a great job putting these baskets together. We thank all the
local merchants who donated items for the baskets.
DJ Paul Craver kept us on the dance floor, enjoying his great music with lots of
friends. The decorations were beautiful and really set the mood for our Red Hot
Chili night. Thank you Ducks and staff for having us. The party was great thanks
to all of our hard working volunteers!!!
The ACSC Winter Workshop was hosted by The Twister's Shag Club in Mooresville,
NC. President Bruce Fitzsimmons, VP Rich Young and Board Member Sheila Wright
attended representing the OD Shag Club. There were about 600 total attendees and
The Twister's Shag Club did an excellent job in hosting the event. During the
meeting on Saturday, the clubs voted on 2 SOS board seats that were up for
election. Don David, from Murrell's Inlet was reelected and Doris Keaton, from
Eden, NC, was voted in to fill the second seat. SOS President Ron Whisenant
thanked Susan Harrell for her years doing a great job as SOS secretary. Susan
recently resigned to spend more time with her grandchildren. She is being
replaced by Wanda Covin. He also discussed meetings he has had with the club
owners in North Myrtle Beach and said the clubs have agreed to do a better job
with door security during future SOS events. He also stated that the clubs have
agreed to have more smoke free dance areas to oblige many of the dancers who
have complained about the smokefilled rooms. To date 4663 SOS
cards have been sold, 1704 during Mid Winter SOS and 2859 through the shag
clubs. The ACSC will have their board elections during the Summer Workshop. If
anyone is interested, they should send their resume to Margo Murphy, 3101 Link
Rd, Lynchberg, VA 24505. The ACSC Summer Workshop is July 9 - 11, 2010 in
Fayetteville, NC. Next year's ACSC Winter Workshop will be February 25-27, 2011
in Columbia, SC and the shag clubs voted to have the ACSC Summer Workshop July 8
- 10, 2011 in Augusta, GA. Also discussed during the Saturday meeting by Lance
Boozer, the ACSC attorney, was the issue with ASCAP. Several shag clubs are
getting threatening letters from ASCAP for not having a license when playing
music during their functions. Most artists list their music with the licensing
company and get paid every time their song is played. Lance will be negotiating
on behalf of the ACSC for payment of an annual fee. More details will be
forthcoming as this issue is resolved. The National Shag Dance Team put on an
excellent demonstration Saturday evening and everyone enjoyed watching their
performance. Now that Studebakers is closed, the National Shag Dance
Championship Finals will be held this month, March 11, 12, & 13 at the Spanish
Galleon in North Myrtle Beach. The weekend was enjoyed by many as they danced to
music played by a variety of DJ's. To close the event, on Sunday, the Twister's
Shag Club offered a great breakfast buffet and had entertainment provided by The
Embers.
The 22nd annual North Myrtle Beach St.
Patrick’s Day Parade will be Saturday, March 13th at 9 am. The line up will
again be located at the Lowe’s parking lot. The line up period at Lowe’s will
begin at 7 am and all units must be ready to go by 8:45 am. We know that is
early for our St. Patty party people, so please be there by 8 am and no later
than 8:30.
We will supply Green Throw Beads and the rule is that you cannot throw anything
from a moving vehicle.. so throw while you are not moving. We will also have
walkers to help throw the beads.
Decorate those golf carts and yourself. We also need our OD Shag Club walkers so
please wear those green tennis shoes and come on down! The parades are so much
fun and if you have never joined in…please make this the year that you do…. You
will LOVE it !
Join the whole gang on Sunday April 18th at 10:00
a.m. at the OD Arcade for a delicious breakfast buffet (Brunch will be served
10:30-11:45 AM). Chris and the gang do a wonderful job cooking up our favorite
breakfast foods for our members and guests and we have a fantastic time, every
time. We'll have the screwdrivers and Bloody Mary's iced and ready ... all you
have to do is show up for a great party and stay a while and enjoy great
friends, food and music. Free to members.......guest $10.00.
April 24th will be the day of the SOS Parade.
We are going to have walkers, a decorated float, followed by our world famous
Golf Carts! We are keeping a list of participants so contact us if you want
to participate. The SOS committee has to know the estimated number.
Donnie is collecting ideas and signing up volunteers to work on
the float theme. Half of the parade fun is being part of his committee. Please
give Donnie Schultz a hand to insure another winning entry. The tradition lives on!
The SOS Awards Ceremony will be held at Fat
Harold’s at 3:30 following the parade. We want to have as many participate as
possible, so please join in the FUN!
