Clean Seep

Terry McCoy

I would like to give a special thanks to those that showed up for clean sweep despite the weather forecast. We had 25 people and picked up 28 bags of trash. Great job!

A special thanks to Lynne and Rick Clawson who hauls the trash to the recycle facility and also to Paula and Tim Webb chairpersons of Clean Sweep.

The first get together of the New Year for the OD Shag Club is the Mid-Winter Brunch at the OD Arcade.  As always, it’s a time for our members to catch up with old friends and an opportunity to meet new members and make new friends.

The Hospitality Committee, led by Cindy Day, was there with their ever-present smiles getting all 201 attendees checked in and food, name tag and logo wear tickets distributed.

Newly elected President Terry McCoy welcomed everyone, announced upcoming club events and let everyone know the “Liquid Sunshine” was ready to be served, so in a manner of seconds the lines had formed!!  He then turned the microphone over to Ways and Means Committee Co-Chair Connie Livingston. She and her partner in crime Cathy Jamiolkowski had recruited some of our club members to “model” the new logo clothing items they had purchased for this year. What a fashion show it was!  All I can say is some of the models better not give up their day jobs!  The items were available for purchase at the Brunch and evidently the club liked the new stuff because they were swamped with sales!!

Something new this year was the fact that we had 2 serving lines for the breakfast buffet.  It was pretty amazing how fast everyone was served.  I heard the kitchen had a hard time keeping up. Great job to Faye Chowning and her Food Committee!!

After breakfast was served Terry drew the raffle winners and they were as follows:

50/50 – Mark Lewis – $250

Name Tag – Carol Bryant – $20

Logo – Bill Milliman – $20

Thanks to everyone who worked to make our 2017 Mid-Winter Brunch a success.  Your dedication and hard work is appreciated and helped to make this event great fun for everyone!

Boy, does this bring back memories! Our first ODSC beginner shag class started in early March. The first class has approximately 26 members learning to shag. This group just mastered lesson four and will be graduating next Thursday. Sonny and Tina Tomberlin have done a great job as the instructors and have assured me that we will start another class in early May.

I am one of the assistants and it is amazing to watch the progress in the last four weeks. The class has learned the basic, female turn, male turn, a start and a triple basic together step, along with a little dance etiquette. It is so gratifying to watch a group of people go from trying to step the basic to actually doing the dance that we all love!

We have assured them that no matter how great a dancer is, they all started with the basic and counted 1&2, 3&4, 5,6 while dancing back in the corner at Fat Harold’s.

Some of our very experienced dancers have come to the lessons to help and dance with people that do not have a partner. Terry McCoy, who is a great shag dancer, told me he really enjoyed the socializing and even learned a couple of tips while helping out.

I think I have talked Sonny and Tina into teaching Beginner II which would include a little more advanced steps, like the pivot, belly roll and a few other moves. Stay turned….Beginner II will be in the fall.

In the meantime, please encourage all our new dancers and spread the word that a new Beginner Class will start in May.

Letter From the President 201701

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday. I would also like to thank everyone for all the cards, phone calls, text and Facebook messages during my sister’s death. It meant so much to me. The first event in January will be our business meeting on the 3rd at 6 pm in the back room of Harold’s.  Hope a lot of you can attend.  On January 10th, we will have our first SASS share a step class at 6 pm in the back room of Harold’s with Kitty and Steve Earle as instructors. Mid-winter will be January 13th – 15th, with our brunch on the 15th at 10 am at OD Arcade.  Clean sweep will be January 20th at 9.00 am at the OD Pavilion. I am looking forward to a great year with many events. If you have any questions, idea’s or comments, feel free to contact me.
