Hello ODSC Members,
I would just like to start off by saying, WOW!!! What a Poker Run!! We had well over 200 people at the run, so that makes it the biggest ever. There is no way of telling how many people will show for this event because it not limited to our shag club. Jim Queen and Paul Harrison did a bang up job. They also had the help of Susan Harrell, Kevin Harrell, Wanda Queen and Vickie Harrison getting everyone signed up and the card drawing at each destination, it takes a group effort. Thanks goes to Vickie Harrison for also taking pictures for our website, along with all the many volunteers that sold 50/50 tickets and helped with the food. Whenever possible, please thank the businesses that supported the OD Shag Club in this event, which included the OD Arcade, Castaways, Boardwalk Billy’s, Deckerz and Fat Harold’s.
Our ODSC Business Meeting is on August 4th at Fat Harold’s 6pm. If you are not able to make it, we meet the first Tuesday of every month and all members are encouraged to attend when you can.
The ODSC Nomination’s Party to be held at Fat Harold’s Beach Club on Saturday, August 22nd at 6pm. This night will be packed full of excitement for the pending 2016 Executive Board. If anyone has not been contacted or changed your mind and would like to run for a position, nominations will also be taken from the floor at this event. The food committee is working hard to plan something special.
Please remember to check the website for upcoming events, we don’t want you to miss a thing!!

The OD Shag Club Demo Team danced for the residents at The Assisted Living Facility at Lakes at Litchfield in Pawley’s Island, SC, July 29, 2015. We arrived around 1:30 pm so that we were ready to dance by 2pm. While setting up and waiting for the residents to arrive, we were greeted with a very warm welcome by the many staff members.
Linda Campbell spoke about our dance team and introduced each team member. As you will see in the pictures most of the residents are in wheelchairs and on walkers. Our objective of the Dance Team in this environment is not teach or to get everyone on the floor to dance, but to perform for those who are unable to do so.
Each couple danced two songs approximately 1:45 – 2:00 minutes all in all we were at the facility for around 2 hours.
It is a warm feeling when you see the smiles on the residents faces and how they enjoy the dance. We were able to have a few residents who were ambulatory to dance. Of course we let them lead. There were two staff members that we taught to dance. The staff and the residents went wild.
I would like to thank the members of the Team who participated at The Lakes: Lou Martino, Linda Campbell, Lenny Gardner, Cherie Patalik, James Thorndyke, Barbara Hopper, Wade Kirdahi, Joyce Girling, and Jay Kellerman.
We have 4 – 5 more events thus far for the rest of the year. Hope to see more club members out to support our team.

Great day for a Poker Run!! Our stops were the OD Arcade, Castaway’s Beach Bar, Boardwalk Billy’s, Deckerz and Fat Harold’s. We had 179 participants with quite a few other people who were riders and all signed waivers. We sold 62 mulligans and had 19 people draw a joker and instantly got their $20 entry fee back. Dana Hunter drew five Kings with a total score of 65, took First Place and won $600.00. Frances Hunter won Second Place with a 58 score and took home $300.00. Scott Michael and Terry McPhail tied for low hand with a score of 10 and elected to split the $200 the win. The rest of the entry money was given in envelopes for drawings at each stop. We raised $760.00 for the Camp Kemo 50/50 drawing, $380.00 went to Tish Joyce and $380.00 will go to Camp Kemo.
Prizes were donated from each of our club stops, as well as donations from Coco Cola by Archie Amerson, First Citizens Bank by Kay Amerson , NBSC by Frances Rogers and Graham’s Golf Carts by Mike Graham.
Thanks to all who participated and helped with the Poker Run.

The OD Shag Club treated the Junior SOS’ers and their parents to brunch on Sunday, July 19th at Fat Harold’s. The OD Shag Club supplied 200 biscuits with various ingredients from Hardee’s as well donuts of assorted flavors and club members brought casseroles and fruits, which included watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, and cherries. Club members brought bacon, sausage, and hash brown casseroles. We also had biscuits and gravy for the servers.
We served 183 juniors and their parents. Needless to say, we almost ran out of food, and were scraping some of the casseroles clean to feed everyone. All of the shag club members who attended had a good time and I hope we can get more members there next year.
After they had eaten, the Juniors enjoyed a gospel sing in the front part of Fat Harold’s. Everyone also enjoyed hearing Torry Perrow’s beautiful singing. Clebe McClary from Pawley’s Island gave a very inspirational talk.
Hope to see many of you at the Poker Run on Saturday and the Boat Ride to Nowhere next month.
Happy Independence Day!!!!
I hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday weekend.
On June 13th Harold Worley, Ray Scott and all the staff at Fat Harold’s hosted a beautiful Celebration of Life Ceremony for our friend and ODSC founder, Harold Bessent. Of course, it was to a packed house and I so enjoyed hearing all the stories told about his extraordinary life.
We had a small gathering at Swillie’s on June 27th and played some corn hole, had some snacks, along with a little social time. Thanks to Terry McCoy for heading up the corn hole tournament and Lou Martino for taking pictures.
Members please attend our ODSC Board Meeting on Tuesday July 7th at 6PM at Fat Harold’s Beach Club.
Our Jr. SOS Brunch will be held on Sunday July 19th at 10am at Fat Harold’s Beach Club. Members are asked to bring pastries, casseroles, fruit, etc. We need your help to provide a wonderful experience for our amazing Jr. dancers.
The Poker Run is on Saturday July 25th at 1pm. The run will start at the OD Arcade and will end with our last stop being at Fat Harold’s. Come one come all, this is a fun day and is not limited to ODSC Members. Prizes will be given away at every stop. You can ride your golf carts or whatever transportation you may have.
Don’t forget your Cruise to Nowhere tickets!! We will be sailing out on August 21st at 6pm. There are only 100 tickets available, please contact Helen Eckhart. You can bring your own coolers, but no glass containers and appetizers will be provided.
Saturday, August 22nd we will be having our Nomination Party at Fat Harold’s. The Nominating Committee will soon be talking to members about the new board for 2016. Nominations will be accepted from the floor at this event. If you have suggestions or opinions, along with the board next year, we would love to hear them. We really need to keep the club moving forward. The food committee is going to have a special treat for us and they will need volunteers to make it happen.
SOS Fun Monday Tickets are available!!! The tickets sales allow us to continue to have a Fun Sunday and Fun Monday. There is also a contest to award the shag club that sells the most tickets, and because we are the largest club, we need to win this. If you are interested in helping sell tickets, please contact me.
We have our Annual ODSC Fall SOS Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 19th. Please mark your calendars and join us for a great golf outing. We will need some help with this event, so please see any board member and volunteer.
